Samurai and Retainers Preparing to Travel, 1853

Comments - Interesting scene of a samurai preparing to travel, waiting next to a horse laden with boxes at the foot of a bridge. A groom kneels beside him, holding a rope tied to the horse, while a group of retainers dressed in matching robes crouches at right. The samurai wears a black kimono with a subtle burnished geometric pattern, his swords at his side and a fan in his hand. The men look up at him expectantly, some frowning unhappily. An intriguing subject with expressive faces and a nicely detailed setting.
