Kyoshi's Wife Carrying Water for Aged Her Mother-in-law - Terrific design from a series based on the book "The Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Devotion," written by the Chinese scholar Guo Jujing during the Yuan Dynasty. Inspired by the loss of his own parents, he scoured history for examples of the most respectful and devoted children. The paragon shown here comes from a tale about Kyoshi (Jiang Shi in Chinese) and his wife, whose mother preferred the taste of river water over that from their own spring. Each day, the pair would travel six miles to the river to bring back water and fresh fish for the mother, never once complaining. The filial couple was rewarded when one day, a new spring rose up in the back yard, with miraculous water that tasted like that of the river. Each day, two koi fish came to the surface of the spring, to be caught for the mother to eat. Kyoshi's wife carries a heavy pail of water through the slanting rain as her elderly mother-in-law looks out the window. At lower left, two fish bob to the surface of the magic spring, raindrops splashing as they hit the surface of the water. Beautifully composed with a handsome landscape setting, and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky. A wonderful image from this rare Kuniyoshi series, one we've never before seen.
