The Founder: Lord Ieyasu (Yasukuni-in) - Terrific illustration of the samurai Honda Heihachiro coming to Lord Ieyasu's assistance during a battle at Magome. The founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Ieyasu receives the messenger at a rustic mountain cabin. Honda kneels before him in full armor, wearing a horned battle helmet, an elderly man gesturing at his side. The shogun stands proudly before them, gesturing imperiously with his fan, one hand gripping his sword. His battle helmet sits on a wooden tub nearby, and a metal pot hang over a smoking fire behind him. The walls of the shabby hut are cracked and crumbling, and a straw mat and straw raincoat hang in the open window. A boat waits on the shore behind, with another retainer waving a fan, and a horse standing patiently. A persimmon tree frames the scene at right, its red orange fruit adding a colorful note. Beautifully drawn with fantastic detail in the setting and the carefully drawn armor and weapons. A great Yoshitoshi triptych.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Very slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few small spots and marks, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
