Series; Annals of the Tokugawa Administration, 1875 - 1876
The Fifteenth of the Line: Lord Tokugawa Yoshinobu - Fantastic triptych showing the fifteenth and final Tokugawa Shogun, Yoshinobu, standing on a boat as his men row him across the white capped water. He is escaping to his ship, the Kanyomaru, following the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. Yoshinobu resigned his position in late 1867 to make way for the new Meiji government. In the prow of the boat, a samurai holding a gun points to the distant shore where smoke billows into the dark night sky. A dramatic night scene with expressive faces and a melancholy, atmospheric setting. Includes a dusting of mica on the sky of the left panel and on some of the waves, and extensive burnishing on the black kimono, boat, and ship.
