Lady's Maid and Samurai, 1862

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene depicting a lady's maid and two samurai brothers. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo as the lady's maid Chidori, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Kajiwara Genta, and Nakamura Shikan IV as Genta's younger brother Kajiwara Heiji. Chidori is in love with Genta, so she has rejected Heiji's advances towards her. She kneels at left, smiling happily up at Genta, who sits on a folding stool with a fan clenched between his teeth. At right, Heiji looks up with an angry, tight-lipped frown, jealous of his brother. He wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric pattern tucked into yellow and blue pants with the same design. The panels across the back of the room repeated the arrow fletches crest of the men, which also appears on their sleeves and shoulders. A great design, nicely detailed and colored.
