One Hundred Ghost Stories of China and Japan

Lord Mashiba Tairyo Hisayoshi, 1865 - Terrific depiction of Lord Mashiba Hisayoshi (the real-life Toyotomi Hideyoshi) on Mount Koya during a tremendous storm. According to legend, Hisayoshi had angered the spirit of Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, who lived on the mountain, where a strict vow of silence was maintained, after Hisayoshi had a Noh play staged there. Great bolts of lightning streak violently across the black sky as rain pelts the ground. Hisayoshi scowls imperiously as he looks up at the night sky, while the two palace guards attending him react with fright as the wind blows their umbrellas inside out. A striking design, beautifully detailed with a burnished scroll pattern in Hisayoshi's black robe, burnishing on the black court caps, and a dusting of mica across the sky. A fantastic, dramatic depiction of this legendary incident. A rarely seen early Yoshitoshi series, and the first time we've offered this great subject.
