Series; Selection of Views of the Tokaido

Dawn at the Nihon Bridge, 1940 - Handsome view of the Nihon Bridge in early morning as the sun rises, the clouds edged with pink light. Tall street lamps tower above the graceful arches of the stone structure, the buildings in the distance still shadowed in blue gray as sunlight illuminates the bridge. The Nihonbashi was the starting point of the original Tokaido Road, and this design comes from Hasui's series of 26 views of the Tokaido, published over a long span from 1931 to 1947. A beautiful scene with lovely handling of the reflections and the effects of light.
