The Murder of Hayase Iori, 1867

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych depicting a scene from the play commonly known as the "Tengajaya Revenge." Hayase Iori has vowed to avenge the death of his father at the hands of the samurai Toma Saburoemon, but through a series of unfortunate events, he has ended up living in a small hut outside the village of Tengajaya, unable to walk. When Saburoemon shows up suddenly one day with his henchman, the two Adachi brothers, the men decide to kill the helpless samurai. Kneeling in the center, Iori faces the evil Adachi Motoemon, who coldly places his blade at the edge of Iori's neck, eyeing him with disdain. The weak Iori struggles to raise his own sword, which has been concealed within a bamboo pole. At left, Adachi Yasuke grimaces as he watches, his own sword drawn. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan IV as the Adachi Yasuke, Sawamura Tossho II as Hayase Iori, and Otani Tomoemon V as Adachi Motoemon. A great image from this dramatic play with an atmospheric setting, thick foliage filling the background against the dark night sky framed by a pine tree at right.
