Sosei Hoshi, Poet No. 21

The Hundred Poets, circa 1840 - 1842

Sosei Hoshi, Poet No. 21 - Handsome scene of the Buddhist monk Sosei sitting on a cushion as he gives a message to his page. The elderly man wears a monk's mantle over a red robe and green pants, stubble dotting his chin. The boy listens to him carefully as he holds a red lacquer box, his kimono shaded from plum to white with maple leaves, pine needle, and cherry blossoms on the sleeves, tucked inot light blue pants. Rugged mountain peaks tower above a row of white clouds, the sky beginning to darken as evening falls. The verse by Sosei Hoshi reads:

Just because she said,
"In a moment I will come,"
I've awaited her
Until the moon of daybreak,
In the long month, has appeared.

An interesting design from this rarely seen Kuniyoshi "Hundred Poets" series.
