Commotion outside a Palanquin, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a commotion taking place outside a palanquin that has stopped near a stone embankment. At right, a beauty emerging from the palanquin holds up a lantern as the man at right raises his sleeve to hide his face, a scroll box in his hand. At left, a rogue holds up along letter as he reads it while keeping hold of another fellow by his collar. The rogue wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric pattern, a white cloth wrapped around his head against the cool night air. Cuckoos swoop past the trees at upper right, and a daimyo's mansion can be seen at left. A handsome design with expressive figures and a nicely detailed night setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 19 5/8"

Condition - This print with nice color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Light soiling. A couple small stains. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
