An Array of Child Heroes, 1841

Comments - Fantastic scene featuring portraits of Japanese heroes as young boys. Each figure is accompanied by a cartouche bearing the child's name and his adult name. At the bottom of the right panel, Oniwaka-maru (Musashi-bo Benkei) sits at a low writing desk, the tip of his brush held to his lips, Buddhist wheels visible on his sleeves. Directly above him, Taira no Tomoakira, the son of Tomomori, wears a blue robe with the Taira butterfly crest over his suit of armor. On the left panel at top center, the young Emperor Antoku wears a gray and white robe and a tall court cap. A terrific image with marvelous individual detail in the figures. A great subject for a student of Japanese history.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14" x 19 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few small tears and thinning at edges, wormholes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
