Series; Stories of Remarkable Persons of Loyalty and High Reputation, 1845

Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo - Terrific portrait of the famed archer Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo, also known as Minamoto no Tametomo, during his exile on the Island of Oshima in Izu. The Taira banished him there for his loyalty to the former Emperor Sutoku. A powerful archer, Tametomo holds a large bow made from a tree branch, frowning solemnly as he stares to the side, his long hair flowing loosely over his back. A local fisherwoman kneels at his feet holding a basket of fresh fish, and a large rusty anchor behind the pair is encrusted with seashells. A line of birds spirals up through the softly shaded sky, disappearing into the distance. A bold design, beautifully detailed.
