American Steamship in Motion, 1861

Comments - Terrific, rare depiction of an American port at night with a steamship in motion, either arriving or preparing to depart. Crowds of men and women are gathered in the foreground, the women wearing bonnets and dresses with full hoop skirts. The group includes several army or navy officers, dressed in black button front jackets with fringed epaulets and helmets or top hats. Smoke billows from the stacks of the ship, and with an almost monochromatic color scheme for the night setting, enlivened with red in the flag and title cartouche and peachy tones on some of the faces. Beautifully detailed with extensive burnishing in the black jackets and the woman's black skirt. Yoshikazu likely based his design on illustrations in foreign newspapers. An incredible Yokohama-e design we've only seen in museum collections before. Don't miss this opportunity to add a special piece to your collection.
