Sumo Wrestler Portraits - Portraits of top sumo wrestlers were popular during the Edo and Meiji eras. These elite athletes are typically shown during the ring entering ceremony, wearing a sumo belt called a "kesho-mawashi" that opens into an embroidered apron trimmed with fringe. The figures appear standing in the ring, striking a bold pose or stamping their feet as part of the ceremony. Some portraits show the wrestlers in daily life, often carrying a robe over their shoulders. These handsome, nicely detailed designs are a great choice for a collector interested in this ancient Japanese sport.
