Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Great Assembly

Comments - Interesting Meiji era scene depicting a great assembly inside a large room. Dignitaries dressed in Western clothes and military uniforms sit in rows of cloth-covered seats as they listen to a bearded man on the podium at left making a proclamation, a paper in hand. Another man stands on the floor below, gesturing with his hand. The room features checked floral carpet in red and green, tall glass windows, and a gas chandelier hanging overhead. The figures are individually detailed, with different expressions and facial hair. Includes extensive burnishing in the black jackets, and fine bokashi shading in the text panel, which takes the form of an unrolled scroll.
