Series; Selections for the Twelve Zodiac Signs
Dragon: Tokubei's Wife, Ohatsu, 1852 - Terrific design from Kuniyoshi's rarely seen series pairing kabuki scenes with the twelve animal signs of the zodiac. Here, Segawa Kikunojo V (who died in 1832) appears as the courtesan Ohatsu, who commits suicide with her lover, Tokubei, after a series of misfortunes. Here, she looks over she shoulder as she seeks shelter beneath a pine tree during a sudden storm, wringing the water from her striped kimono. Played by Bando Mitsugoro III (who died in 1831), an elderly man approaches behind her, frowning as he holds his hat above his heads. A string of prayer beads is draped over his ear, a practice thought to curb temper. A great design, beautifully composed and detailed with nice handling of the sheer fabric over the beauty's arm.
