Nun Attacking a Commoner, 1889

Comments - Dramatic kabuki triptych depicting the nun Osono attacking a commoner, threatening him with a short sword held high in her hand. He quickly lifts a folding screen over his shoulder to deflect the blow as she glares at him, tight-lipped. She wears a black mantle over a purple floral robe, her hair simply arranged with a single white ribbon. A plum tree covered with delicate pink and white blossoms frames the scene at left. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke and as Onoe Kikugoro V as Osono. A terrific design with large expressive figures and fine detail in the hair.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold at left edge of two panels. Slight soiling, a few small spots, slight rubbing at edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
