Women's Etiquette Pictures

Flower Arranging and Tea Ceremony, 1890 - Charming scene of beauties arranging flowers and performing a tea ceremony. In the center, a woman kneels beside a brazier heating the water, a purple cloth in her hand, a tea bowl, tea caddy, and whisk set out nearby. Above her, a beauty carries a blossoming plum branch to add to an arrangement of flowers. Several completed designs are set out on low lacquer stands. At left, a young girl sits with a mochi cake in paper in her lap, a bowl of sweets on a tray on the floor at her side. At right, a beauty and a young girl practice bonseki, the art of creating miniature landscapes on lacquer trays using sand and small rocks. The niche behind them holds a scroll of a carp or koi. An attractive view of traditional upper class ladies' activities. Nicely detailed and colored.
