Comments - Lovely triptych showing the beauty Shizuka Gozen performing as a shirabyoshi dancer before the Shogun Yoritomo. Shizuka Gozen was the mistress of Yoritomo's brother Yoshitsune, with whom he was feuding. While Yoshitsune was in hiding, the shogun sent for Shizuka Gozen to have her dance for him at the famous shrine at Tsurugaoka, hoping to trick her into revealing Yoshitsune's whereabouts, but she kept his secret. Known for her beauty and dancing skill, Shizuka Gozen waves her sleeve gracefully before the assembled court, accompanied by musicians at left playing a drum and cymbals. The shogun sits on a platform at far left in a separate room, two young pages in red robes behind him. The open verandah overlooks a view of a flowing river under a blossoming cherry tree. Wonderful detail in this fantastic scene from courtly life, embellished with embossing in the white kimono collar and burnishing in the black kimono and black court caps. A beautiful design.
