Comments - Intriguing scene of the great daimyo Oda Nobunaga (here called Harunaga to evade censorship rules) on a hunting trip. The young Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Sarukichiro) has taken the opportunity to break into the hunting party and offer his services to the lord. Mistaken for a spy, Nobunaga's men quickly surround him, thrusting spears at him as Nobunaga gestures at him angrily with his bow at left. The daimyo wears the distinctive hat favored for hunting and fine robes, a quiver of arrows at his back. His retainers gather around him, ready to attack the intruder if needed. From this unusual start, Toyotomi Hideyoshi became a servant to Nobunaga, rising to a position of general, and later became his master's successor. A terrific triptych with wonderful detail in the mountainous setting, with colorful banners and standards fluttering in the wind above the treetops. Beautifully drawn with fine shading in the grassy ground and darkening sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great early Yoshitoshi triptych.
