Nomi no Sukune Wrestling with Taima no Kehaya, 1885 - Interesting depiction of Nomi no Sukune grappling with his opponent Taima no Kehaya in 23 BCE. According to legend, Nomi no Sukune was victorious, and this wrestling match was the origin of sumo wrestling. Here, the pair faces each other with angry determination, their tucked up robes revealing bulging muscles. Beautifully printed with delicate cloth embossing in the black robe, fine bokashi shading, and handsome wood grain impression in the background. A great subject for a collector interested in this ancient sport.
