Man Dancing with a Puppet, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a man performing a dance with a puppet of a samurai. He holds the puppet high with one hand as he hops on once foot, a dismayed expression on his face as the beauty Oume seems to be daydreaming rather than watching him. She smiles as she tilts her head to the side, adjusting a hairpin with one hand while holding a slender pipe, a tobacco set on the floor nearby. Her kimono is shaded from black to yellow and bordered with hydrangeas, tied with a blue and white checked obi. At left, Magosaburo scratches his head in a puzzled manner as he carries in a kettle. A meal is laid out on a red tray on the floor at left, and a scroll hangs in a niche at top center. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, Onoe Kikugoro IV, and Bando Hikosaburo V. Nice expressive figure in a handsome interior setting.
