The Syllable Ra for Raigo the Rat Priest: Nakamura Fukusuke I as Shimizu Kaja Yoshitaka

Series; After the Seven Iroha, 1856

After the Seven Iroha - Attractive design from an 1856 Toyokuni III series pairing kabuki scenes with numbers. These lively images feature expressive figures in handsomely detailed settings. Nicely colored, many include deluxe printing techniques such as bokashi shading or embossing. The red title cartouche at upper right appears to emerge from a demon's mouth, with a text panel next to it in the form of a scroll unrolling. The series is very similar to Toyokuni III's "Seven Variations of the Iroha" from the same year. A great example of Toyokuni III's fine kabuki prints.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Stitching holes at one side, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases at edges. A few prints have a few stains or a couple holes or thinning spots, repaired. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
