Comments - Fantastic triptych illustrating a famous episode during the Second Battle of Uji River in 1184. Under the direction of Yoshitsune, Minamoto warriors race across the river on horseback to see who can reach the enemy first. Sasaki Takatsuna leads the way on the Shogun Yoritomo's best horse, Ikezuki, followed by Kajiwara Kagesue on Yoritomo's black horse, Surusumi, and Hatakeyama Shigetada carrying his horse on his shoulders. The deep water is up to the necks of the horses as they ford the rushing river under a hail of arrows. Yoshitsune sits on horseback at right, waving his tasseled command baton, surrounded by retainers. Standards fly overhead, fluttering in the breeze. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A terrific panoramic view of this historic battle, and a classic samurai subject.
