Contemporary Portraits of Actors with Their Own Handwriting, 1861

Contemporary Portraits of Actors with Their Own Handwriting - Handsome kabuki portrait from Toyokuni III's series featuring actors accompanied by a verse in their own handwriting. Each design features a large portrait with a smaller scene above related to the role, and a vertical panel containing the poem. The circular artist cartouche at the top of the panel takes the form of the Toshidama seal used by artists of the Utagawa School, which Toyokuni III headed after the death of Toyokuni I. One of Toyokuni III's late series, it demonstrates the artist's mature style and mastery of the kabuki portrait genre. Beautifully detailed with delicate allover cloth embossing in the verse panel and the inset, many designs also include deluxe printing techniques such as burnishing or additional embossing. A rarely seen series and a nice choice for a collector interesting in kabuki subjects.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4"
