Gempei Equestrian Ball Game, 1852

Comments - Intriguing image of men playing of dakyu, a game with similarities to both polo and lacrosse. Dating back to the eight century, dakyu was popularized by the aristocracy, and was considered excellent training for warfare. Here, two players on horseback lean over their mounts as they reach for the balls with bamboo poles with small baskets at the ends. They wear hunting clothes, including a distinctive woven hat and fur chaps. A small group of men watches from the entrance to the enclosed area. An interesting subject.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A few small holes. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
