The Battle of Uji River, 1849

Comments - Terrific scene of generals Cages (left), Suketsune (center), and Shigemasa (right), fording the river during the 12th century Battle of Uji River during their famous race to reach the opposite shore and engage the enemy first. At right, Shigemasa leads the way, supporting his horse's front legs over his shoulders, just his helmet visible. Suketsune and Cages remain seated astride their mounts although the deep water is up to their necks, with retainers leading the frightened horses by the bridles. A fantastic image from this historic battle with wonderful detail and fine bokashi shading in the sky and swiftly flowing water. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great subject for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
