Battle atop the Horyukaku Rooftop

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the samurai Inuzuka Shino battling Inukai Kempachi and his men on the roof of the Horyukaku, a tower of Koga Castle. This scene illustrates a popular episode from the Edo era novel "Nanso Satomi and the Eight Dog Warriors." Standing in the center with his sword held high, Inuzuka Shino fights valiantly, sending his opponents tumbling through the air and sliding down the tiled rooftop, their iron truncheons flying. At lower left, Inukai Kempachi strikes a pose with his feet spread firmly apart, clenching a truncheon between his teeth. He wears a dragon pint robe trimmed with swinging fringe. A terrific, dramatic composition with excellent architectural detail, great expressive faces, and vibrant color. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast.
