From the Uchida Publisher Archives - We were fortunate to purchase a wonderful collection of 20th century prints directly from the archives of the Uchida Art Company of
Original Uchida Drawing and Reprint Set - We're pleased to offer a unique group of working drawings with corresponding woodblock prints from a reprint edition of Hiroshige's "Hoeido Tokaido" series published by Uchida. We acquired this group directly from Uchida's archives, and each set offers terrific insight into the technical process of producing a woodblock print.
Each set consists of a preparatory ink drawing along with a full-color completed woodblock print of the same subject. Called a hanshita, each beautifully detailed sketch is drawn in black ink on very thin paper, to be used for the outline or key block of the print. Most of the drawings include corrections or revisions in white pigment. The completed woodblock reprint brings these basic outlines to life in bright color, with fine detail and soft shading. A rare opportunity to purchase original preparatory artwork used to create a Japanese woodblock print. A great choice for a collector or a student of printmaking.
Artist - After Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)
Image Size - Each image 5 3/8" x 7 3/8" + margins as shown
Condition - Drawing: Cellophane tape remnants at corners, a few creases. Reprint: Excellent overall with no issues to report.
