Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lord Wakasanosuke, 1876

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of an actor as Lord Wakasanosuke in the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura." The nobleman becomes angry after watching Lord Moronao attempt to press his affections on Lady Kaoyo, the wife of his friend, Lord Hangan. Here, he frowns as he tilts his head to the side, his brows furrowed. The edge of a tray with a message on top of it can be seen at right. He wears a blue gray kamishimo with a bird print in the center over a deep blue kimono, and a tall black court cap with a beautiful burnished pattern. The figure is set against a red tie-dyed textile design, the inset framed by a gray border with the dark silhouettes of pines and blossoming plum trees. A great image in an interesting format.
