Record of the War in Kagoshima: Mountain Battle, 1877

Comments - Dramatic image of fighting in the mountains during the Satsuma Rebellion. On the rocky slope at upper left, rebels fire down on the Imperial Army troops in the valley, who are mounting the top of the hill to engage the samurai at right. Saigo Takamori directs the troops from horseback at right, while below him, men load a cannon. Clouds of smoke billow up across the rugged hills, and the white banner fluttering at right features a slogan that was fabricated for the rebels by woodblock print artists, "A New Government, Rich in Virtue." The slogan was never actually used by Saigo, whose red and white flags shown featured the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma. A striking action scene, detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms.
