Sawamura Tanosuke III as the Evil Omatsu, 1865

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke as the evil female bandit Omatsu. She looks over her shoulder with a slight smile as she pushes up the sleeve of her outer robe, which features writing on the shoulders and is trimmed with black bands of pine trees in rain. She holds a lantern in her other hand, and her suit of armor is edged with fur at the cuffs. Her long hair is pulled back into a low knot over her shoulders, but worn short and shaggy on top in the style of a rogue or street knight. The background features bamboo in silhouette against a blue-gray sky, with insets in the shape of a butterfly and bird. A fantastic image with fine line work in the hair and a subtle burnished pattern in the black areas of the robe.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous mounting. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and small spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
