Comments - Terrific scene of Lady Hangaku, one of just a few known women warriors, fighting at the Battle of Torizaka in Echizen Province. On horseback in the center, she wields a naginata with both hands above her head as an opponent on a gray horse charges at her, their weapons clashing. Another enemy tumbles head over heels through the air above her, while rider falls from his stumbling horse at lower left. At upper left, samurai scale the stone wall of a castle under a hail of arrows, while at right other troops fight on a bridge leading to the fortress. A lively scene, filled with action and wonderfully detailed. A rare depiction of this famous woman warrior.
