Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauties with Western Hairstyles

Comments - Terrific image of beauties wearing a Western hairstyle introduced during the Meiji era called a sokuhatsu, which consisted of a bun or chignon at the back of the head. Across the top, four oval insets show variations of the style, while below, two women model the latest European fashions. The beauty at right wears a blue floral dress with a tightly fitted bodice and a bustled overskirt, and a hat trimmed with flowers and purple ribbons. The woman at left wears a black dress with a red and green striped panel down the front, her hand resting atop the back of a chair. A fascinating look at the rapid changes taking place in Japan during the Meiji era. A rarely seen subject, nicely detailed.
