Mori Rikimaru, 1868

Series; Yoshitoshi's Selection of One Hundred Warriors, 1868 - 1869

Yoshitoshi's Selection of One Hundred Warriors - In 1868, Yoshitoshi witnessed firsthand the battles between the shogun's forces and Imperial troops during the Meiji Restoration, recording battlefield scenes for woodblock illustrations. The exposure to these violent and bloody conflicts directly affected his work, resulting in the often gruesome series "Yoshitoshi's Selection of One Hundred Warriors." This exceptional group is known for its unflinching portrayal of the violence and gore of war, realistically depicting samurai in the heat of battle or the bloody aftermath. Published between 1868 and 1869, only 65 works were completed, but it remains one of his most important early series. These large, bold portraits are a fine choice for a Yoshitoshi collector or samurai enthusiast.
