Martial Arts Instruction, 1888

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of the young warrior Miyamoto Musashi receiving martial arts instruction from Tsukahara Bokuden at the master's rustic cabin in the mountains. His sleeves tied back with white sashes for ease of movement, the samurai wields a wooden sword in each hand as his master counters the blows using a wooden pot lid. A kettle hangs over a floor brazier behind the old man, clouds of smoke drifting up from the pines sprigs on the fire below. A young woman arrives at the rustic home carrying a load of firewood on her back, lifting her hat as she prepares to enter, smiling slightly at the earnest student. A great image with a wonderful setting as snow falls outside. Nicely detailed with fine embossing in the elderly man's white hair and beard, and a burnished geometric pattern in the black kimono.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 3/4" + margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold at edge of center panel. Slight toning and soiling, a few stains and paper remnants at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
