Prince Genji Enjoying a Boat Ride, 1865

Comments - Handsome triptych of Prince Genji and a beauty enjoying a spring boat ride to view the cherry blossoms. He smiles as he chats with his companion, gesturing towards the oversize peonies growing along the shore. The elegantly decorated boat features a dragon along the front, and two young girls in Chinese robes trimmed with ruffles pole the craft along. Flowering cherry trees covered with pink blossoms dot the garden surrounding the large pond, and two mandarin ducks float on the water at right. A charming design, beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black lacquer boat and the black obi, and embossing in the white kimono trim and the ruffles.
