Street Knights under a Plum Tree, 1866 - Fantastic kabuki triptych depicting three otokodate or street knights dressed in fabulous kimono against a blossoming plum tree in silhouette. The young man at left has an enormous octopus on his robe, while the fellow in the center wears a kimono with an elephant over the shoulders. At right, Shoki no Hanbe wears a robe with an image of his namesake Shoki the Demon Queller. The actors include Nakamura Shikan IV in the center panel and Bando Hikosaburo V as Shoki no Hanbe at right. A terrific design, beautifully colored and detailed. We've never before seen this subject.
