Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nakamura Shikan I as a Street Knight

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan I as an otokodate or street knight. He learns forward with an angry scowl as he lifts the edge of his robe, a folding fan in his other hand and a shakuhachi flute visible at his back. He wears a black kimono patterned with white cranes in flight and striped drawstring bags over a red loincloth, a white towel wrapped about his neck. Similar to the cutout woodblock prints used to decorate folding screens, the background features small insets of woodblock prints in various designs. An interesting design, nicely detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 3/4" x 10"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, loss at corner, a few small wormholes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
