Warrior Running and Surprised Man

Series; One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Suikoden, 1853

Hokkei's Suikoden - Terrific image from Hokkei's series depicting the characters from the classic Chinese novel, "The Water Margin" (Suikoden in Japanese). Loosely based on historical events, the book tells the story of a group of 108 rebels living at the edge of Liangshan Marsh who helped to protect the poor and oppressed. Hokkei was one of Hokusai's most successful students, and these images are beautifully drawn with an exceptional attention to detail and fine line work. The expressive figures and exotic costumes and weapons bring this incredible story to life. "The Water Margin" is considered a masterpiece of classic Chinese literature, and the turbulent tale of feudal life made a terrific subject for Japanese woodblock artists. A great choice for a collector interested this timeless novel. This is a later edition of the series originally published in 1829 as "Portraits of Heroes of the Suikoden" (Suikoden gazoshu).
