The Fifth of the Line: Lord Tsunayoshi (Joken-in)

Series; Annals of the Tokugawa Administration, 1875 - 1876

The Fifth of the Line: Lord Tsunayoshi (Joken-in) - Handsome scene of Lord Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, enjoying the company of the beautiful young courtesan during a fall outing to view the chrysanthemum blossoms. He relaxes at right on a bench covered with red cloth, the beauty leaning against him, one arm around his shoulder. He holds an ornate pipe, and she rests her hand atop his possessively. She wears a fantastic black kimono patterned with flowers and trimmed with yellow tassels, and tall black lacquer sandals. Another courtesan approaches at left, accompanied by her two young kamuro. The servant sheltering her with an umbrella scowls angrily. Beautifully detailed with burnished patterns on the two black kimono, and burnishing on the women's lacquer geta clogs. A fascinating historic subject from this rarely seen Yoshitoshi series.
