Comments - Great kabuki scene from the tale of Taira no Koremochi's encounter with the Demon of Mount Togakushi. While hunting deer in the hills outside Kyoto, Lord Koremochi ran into a party of beautiful women so he joined them in a picnic. Sleepy with wine, he dozed off, and dreamed of a messenger from the god of war warning him that one of the women was actually the demon Kiji, who intended to kill him. He awoke, realizing the woman's true nature, and attacked her with his sword. He leaps to his feet, brandishing his weapon at the beauty, who looks back at him with rather surprised frown as she throws off the pink kimono draped over her head. Colorful maple leaves framed the blue sky above. A lively illustration of this famous tale.
