Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nursemaid with Heir and Son,

Comments - Handsome scene from a kabuki play based on the true story of the contested Date Clan succession in the 17th century. The loyal wet nurse Masaoka has been charged with protecting young Tsuruchiyo, the heir to the clan, who is in danger of being poisoned. She has been keeping him in the women's quarters, with her son, Senmatsu. Here, she looks warily over her shoulder at a samurai, grimacing and eying him suspiciously, always cautious in maintaining her important duty to watch over the child. An attractive design with fine architectural detail in the palace interior, the walls lined with panels depicting a bamboo grove. Nicely detailed with a burnished geometric pattern in Tsuruchiyo's kimono at right, and burnishing in her own black outer robe and her son's black kimono.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold near right edge. Slight soiling, slight curling at sides. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
