One Hundred Roles of Ichikawa Danjuro IX - In 1893, Kunichika was commissioned to create the series "One Hundred Roles of Ichikawa Danjuro IX," depicting the kabuki star in his most famous roles, including many from classic kabuki dramas. These deluxe prints feature a half-length portrait of Danjuro IX, usually against a solid ground or with clouds across the top of the page. The simple backgrounds focus all attention on the expressive figures and colorful costumes. A rectangular inset includes a poem or small image, while the peonies framing the title cartouche are associated with the actor. These lavish images were printed to the highest standards, using expensive techniques and materials such as burnishing, embossing, and mica. The series was finally completed in 1903. This outstanding series is considered one of Kunichika's greatest works, making the subjects wonderful additions to a kabuki collection or for a collector of Kunichika prints.

Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Shinonome, 1899 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Shinonome, the mother of the beauty Tasogare. After Tasogare falls in love with Prince Genji, the lovers arrange a meeting at a secluded old temple. Shinonome follows them, attempting to frighten them with a horned demon mask of a jealous woman. Here, the matron leans forward with her hand outstretched, the mask hanging from a red cord between her teeth. She wears a gray and brown kimono patterned with chrysanthemums, peonies, and falling autumn leaves, her long hair pulled back into a low knotted ponytail over her back. The background is beautifully detailed with an embossed pattern of autumn grasses. A handsome design from this deluxe Kunichika series.
