Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Couple and Mosquito Net

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Lovely design of a young couple preparing for bed, the beauty separated from her lover by the mosquito netting. Her purple and white tie-dyed kimono has fallen open slightly as she reaches around behind her back to untie her black feather print obi, which reverses to a rosy pink pattern. The man wears a checked kimono and holds a slender pipe. Beautifully detailed with fine line work in the netting. An attractive image, rarely seen in reprint.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 15 1/8" x 10 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at two points on left side from previous mounting. Slight toning, a few spots, a couple light creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
