Goyo Studio Reprints - Hashiguchi Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e designs from the golden age of the Japanese woodblock print. Between 1918 and 1920, much of Goyo’s artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints of classic ukiyo-e prints. Each image was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo circular seal. Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo’s studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim.

Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and rare to find. This is an exceptional opportunity!

Beauties and a Pet Monkey - Interesting portrait of a beauty and a young girl playing with a pet monkey. The beauty looks down, tugging at the edge of her black outer kimono as the monkey tries to scramble up her leg. The girl watches the animal solemnly, holding onto its leash. Both the red and black kimono are bordered with a design of decorative battledores and shuttlecocks for a game similar to badminton. A fine subject.

Artist - Koryusai (1735 - 1790)

Image Size - 11" x 7 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Paper remnant on reverse at one edge from previous mounting. Slight toning, a few creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
