Lord Sugawara no Michizane Praying at Mt. Tempai

Comments - Fantastic depiction of Lord Sugawara no Michizane (Kan Shojo) praying atop Mt. Tempai in a scene from the play "Sugawara Denju Tenerai Kagami." A raging storm breaks out as jagged bolts of lightning zigzag across the sky beneath dark clouds He stares up as he raises a bamboo pole in his hand, the wind whipping his hair and his robes about him. A dramatic design, beautifully detailed embossing in the white outer kimono, and a geometric pattern on the white under robe in a metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone. A great bold kabuki image.
