Illustration of the Diet Building, 1890

Comments - Handsome view of the modern Diet Building, which housed Japan's representative assembly, the Imperial Diet. At left, the Meiji Emperor sis atop a dais flanked by two clerks taking notes, while a speaker stands on a low platform in front of him. Rings of concentric benches line the floor, filled with representatives in black suits, while on the balcony at upper right, a group of army officers watches from ornately carved wooden chairs trimmed with fringe. Another row of viewers sits on a long bench stretching across the balcony along the side of the room. The building is elegantly decorated with patterned carpets and heavy draperies. A great historic image with fine detail, including burnishing in the black uniforms and suits.

Artist - Shogetsu (active circa 1880 - 1890)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 18 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
