Ichikawa Kodanji as Ishikawa Goemon, 1861

Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Kodanji as the legendary robber Ishikawa Goemon, grimacing angrily as he throws his hand open before him. He wears a white kimono shaded in yellow with a beautiful embossed geometric pattern over a suit of armor. His short hair sticks up in a halo atop his head, his longer hair pulled back into a thick ponytail. A large wicker basket or trunk tied over his shoulders conceals his father-in-law, and the rod extending upwards from it allows the character to fly on stage. A great expressive figure, detailed with burnishing in the black lacquer edges of the trunk.

Artist - Kuniaki II (1835 - 1888)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Stitching holes at right edge from previous binding, repaired. Slight toning, a few creases, very slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
