Kagekiyo Breaking out of Prison, 1849

Comments - Handsome illustration from the play "Hatsumoto Yui Soga no Kyodai." In the center, the great Taira warrior Kagekiyo strikes a bold pose as he raises a wooden beam above his head after being imprisoned by the Minamoto. The stiff sleeves of his padded outer kimono stick out beside him like wings, and his flared wig and red and gray stage makeup give him a fierce expression. At right, the Genji commander Chichibu Shigetada watches with a worried expression, while Kagekiyo's sweetheart, Akoya, kneels below. Shigetada's retainer Iwanaga Munetsura grimaces at lower left, the beauty Hitomaru standing behind him. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Shinsha I, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Onoe Kikujiro II, and Bando Hikosaburo IV. A great design, beautifully detailed with burnishing in Kagekiyo's kimono and flared wig, and Iwanaga's green robe.
